0:00 Hey Next Level Coaches, Coach Bradley here, and welcome to Module 8 of our Student Coach Training. Today, we’re covering Key Policies and Penalties that are essential for game day.

Key Policies

0:11 At Next Level, we have two critical policies to follow every weekend:

  1. Playing Time Policy
All players must receive equal playing time. If you need more details, please refer to the Rotation Rules Module for further clarification.

  2. Touch Policy
Every player should touch the ball at least once per game.
Even if you have a less athletic player, something as simple as a handoff or a quick pass makes a big difference in their experience. Keep everyone involved!

0:31 Here's a real-life example that illustrates the importance of this:

"My son asked to play quarterback at practice but was disregarded. He’s been with Next Level for five years, but this season, for the first time, he felt left out and frustrated. It’s heartbreaking as a parent to see his passion for the game diminish."

0:47 This could be easily avoided by simply sharing the ball. If we make an effort to involve everyone, we can prevent players from feeling disconnected and disengaged.

1:02 Keep this in mind: No player should sit out more than anyone else based on their skill level. Rotate your players fairly and always give everyone a chance to contribute.

Key Penalties

2:00 Now, let’s go over some key penalties. For a detailed breakdown of all penalties, refer to Modules 9 and 10 of the Referee Training. But for now, here are the three key penalties to watch out for as student coaches:

2:13 1. No Tackling on Defense
Tackling is strictly prohibited. This includes:

  • Pulling a player’s shirt to the ground

  • Form tackling or wrapping up

  • Pushing players out of bounds

  • Excessive pulling of the jersey

If there’s any unnecessary contact from the defense, the referees must call it. This is to ensure the game remains safe and fun. Remember, we’re here to play flag football, not tackle football!

2:45 2. No Blocking on Offense
Blocking, whether it’s pushing, running a basketball-style screen, or interfering with the defender’s ability to pull a flag, is also prohibited. No blocking. This is another non-negotiable penalty. If you see this happening, remind your players to keep their hands to themselves and stay on their feet.

3:08 3. Flag Guarding
This is one of the most common penalties we see. Flag guarding happens when players use their off-hand to swat away defenders or protect their flags.

  • Reminder to your players: "Keep your hands up and pump your arms. No flag guarding!"

  • This gives the defense a fair chance to pull the flag.

3:39 That’s it for today’s training. Remember, these policies and penalties help us keep the game fun, fair, and safe for everyone.
